about

“I made friends with a fellow songwriter that I met sharing a gig in a seaside town. We kept in touch over a few years; and I saw him at his best and at his worst. I made an offer to help him when I saw him on the rocks and ‘knee deep in need’. The way I figure it, when you’ve faced your own challenges, your own desperation in one form or another and you’ve had the good fortune of coming through it, you have the ability, or possibly even a duty to share your experience, strength, and hope in a completely non-judgmental way.
When he fell off the face of the earth with my offer hanging in mid-air, I set out writing Weeds. The title comes from the line, way out in the weeds. When I sing that line, it invokes an image from the ‘80’s film “Ironweed” with Jack Nicholson and Meryl Streep about a pair of star-crossed alcoholics that sleep in a field of weeds.
The tune has four verses and a downplayed chorus. It has no bridge, and it features accordion (played by keyboardist Ben Alexandre). I never figured that this song would be a single, much less even be recorded. It’s just a personal song but somehow, it’s my favorite on the record.”

lyrics

Weeds (Track 9)

When hope is on “E”
When hope is on “E”

You’re revved up in park all alone in the dark
Where the hell did love go? Nobody knows
And the blow-and-go won’t go no more
For mother’s little hobo

When hope is on “E”
And you’re way out in the weeds

Wound up on side streets all tangled in knots
And all you remember is how you forgot
No amount of napkins can begin to sop up
All the blank spots that you can’t blot

Way out in the weeds
You can call on me

Reall love is free
I know it’s hard to believe
You can call on me

Knee deep in need
Knee deep in need

Treading the vortex, swimming with sharks
Red in the water right from the start
The illusion comes together the more you fall apart
Tarred and feathered and bleeding from the heart

Knee deep in need
Real love is free

When fun house mirrors are all you can see
Lip-licking smiles with razor-sharp teeth
Seasick of the fun of bumper-car whiplash
Punch-drunk from interpersonal backlash

Real love is free
You can call on me

Real love is free
I know it’s hard to believe
You can call on me
